La Palma originally called San Miguel de la La Palma is a volcanic Island like the other islands of the Canary Island group of the Atlantic Ocean. La Palma has an area of 706 km2 and the total population is about 85,000.
There is road access from sea level which is marked by an outcrop of rocks called Los Muchachos. This is the very famous site of the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory, one of the world's premier astronomical observatories.
La Palma's geography is a result of the volcanic formation of the island. The northern part of La Palma is dominated by the exceptional Caldera de Taburiente. The capital is Santa Cruz de La Palma. A biosphere reserve was established in 1983, and extended and renamed in 1997 and 2002.
Nowadays, La Palma is well know by the name "Isla Bonita" “beautiful island" for its natural and splendorous beauty. La Palma has an area of 706 km2 and the total population is about 85,000.
